Because it works on twice as much data in a single cycle.  A 32 bit processor
requires two or more instructions to operate on 64 bit values such as those
found in Crafty (and other bitmap programs).  A 64 bit cpu requires only one
instruction.  IE it is twice as fast at the same clock frequency for those
places where the 64 bit operations are needed...
