Like a drug user, forced to do anything he can to supply their habit, they will
extract money to keep up their quest.  However, I am absolutely sure that both
Frans Morsh and Christophe Theron could earn many time more doing something
else.  To write a chess program at that level requires incredible ability.

The money does not drive the generation of chess programs, even for the
professionals.  If I am wrong, they are free to correct me.
