Go up one level in this thread

Go for Mandrake. I've installed it last week, very easy install tool, LILO
installed in the MBR. Just check if you're not running XP or Win 2000, as the
instalation with these OS is a little different.

I'm not a programmer (I'm a physician, Clinical Neurologist), but I've installed
at home many different distributions of Linux since Turbo Linux 4.2, Debian,
RedHat,Conectiva, Caldera, Corel, Slackware, Suse, and also FreeBSD, OpenBSD,
NetBSD, ... and I can say this Mandrake 8.2 distro has the easiest install tool
of them all; it auto-configured my sound card, and even my video-capture card
(which configured easily in Win98SE, but I spent many months searching in the
net for a way to configure it under Win2000); no problems with my Voodoo-3
3000AGP card as well (Win2000 drivers are difficult for this card - I was using
AmigaMerlin driver). Auto-mounts my CD-ROM and drives (I hated that in earlier
distros); good interface GNOME and Window-Maker (you can install KDE if you
like it) (I prefer Enlightenment, although it's a little bit unstable).

Unfortunately, I was accostumed to Win 2000 and Winboard, and I really did not
like Xboard; I also think that there's a great difference between Windows and
Linux when it concerns Computer Chess. I did not try Wine - I think if I could
run Chessbase & Fritz GUI under Linux I would give it another try... (just
reformatted it after a week of tests).

I would not recommend programs like Partition Manager or System Commander, as
they're not cheap, and you can do the same job with LILO or the Win2000 loader.
