Chess is a *game* in the first place, not a scientific research project. I think Uri is right (below). The fact that mate can be forced in a position in >50 moves does not mean, that the rules must make an exception. Why? These are two different things. The long mates which were discovered, are results of research, IOW. tablebase generation. - And the 50 move rule is part of the rules for the game. Maybe a new edition of the tablebases would be usesful, which reflect that rule. I'm sure it could be done somehow... with a 50 move counter which counts backwards during tbs. generation probably. The tbs. info should show if there are variations to mate without, or with such a 50 move sequence (the latter therefore being evaluated as draws). Until then, it will happen that half points are wasted due to the use of tablebases, for that reason (too). Regards, M.Scheidl
