Before you disable kudzu, as Dr. Hyatt noted below, you may also want to see if
the following setting is in your /etc/sysconfig/kudzu file:

SAFE=yes

This setting is supposed to allow kudzu to run without attempting to reset the
hardware as it probes for new hardware (by default, kudzu attempts a reset of
the hardware as it probes).  Don't know if that's what is happening with your
USB stuff (being reset by kudzu and locking the system up), but it can't hurt to
try.
