The roots of the program are two: "Echecs 1.9" (IIRC, by Baudot) and "Cumulus" (by Weill). During the Micro WCh in Lyon 1990, Echecs could have won the title instead of the "usual" championhip win in those years, by R.Lang's Mephisto program. Echecs made a draw in the decisive game against Mephisto Lyon, due to a contempt factor, otherwise it could have won. 2. Later, Baudot & Weill joined forces to create Virtual Chess. 3. Next Micro WCh results were 4th place in Paderborn 1995, 6th place in Jakarta 1997 and 2nd place in Paris 1997 (in the WCCC 1995 it was only 12th). 4. It is not quite clear if the first Windows version - 1.0 f.W. - or Virtual Chess 2 is the strongest edition; there were several (but no No. 3). 5. There was even a Nintendo 64 version which I have tested some years ago. Unfortunately, this was a weak and buggy conversion. 6. Virtual Chess adds to a growing list of good programs which are discontinued (like PC Genius, Wchess, M-Chess, CSTal, and probably some others which I already have forgotten). Regards, M.Scheidl
