to refer to you last post christophe, I would call this sport. It is a competition and junior was succesful ! It may be that others would have been able to win too. But amir made the best out of the tournament. I mean, there is o doubt that junior is a strong program and is an enrichement for the market ! It has contributed something to the computerchess scene because it plays very good chess... always good moves... and is good in endgames, normally. Of course one can discuss if other programs are better, but thats not the point of the tournament/championship. You are right: joining the social group is very important. but also the competition itself: that is what I would call SPORT. On the other hand, one point to criticize what you said: i have many doubts that playing tiger x vs. tiger x+1 , no matter how many games you play, gives better data than playing against different opponents. there is a kind of incest-reason, the results x vs. x+1 do not give the same data than x against y. The best thing would be: 30 games against a, 30 games against b, 30 games against c etc. But often there is not much time. So you maybe only play 10 games. A tournament has a different intention IMO. It is fun, sport and a title is played out / found. Like the oscar-nomination. It is not always the best actor getting an oscar. And often very very good actors don't get it. Therefore we play tiger against all kinds of programs. If we would have enough time (and if your tiger would support auto232 BIG HINT !!!!!) one would be able to play more games ... :-)))
