That's partially correct. It varies depending on the scientific discipline (and
sometimes from University to University as well). Some require a large degree of
actual research, while others require none whatsoever. In the latter case it's
usually sufficient to document the capability to extract and present the most
significant work within the thesis topic in an independant and argumentatively
persuasive fashion.
