I have observed the postings made to this site since its inception, and have held back from writing this post...until now. No...I'm not a person who posts frequently to this site. In fact, I've only posted once before...until now. Yes...I do visit this site at least once a day, usually many times a day. Yes...I have learned much from this site as far as the topic of computer chess is concerned. I have had the benefit of assimilating information from some of the most heralded computer chess programmers in the world. Likewise, some of the most respected experts in the field of computer chess have also posted their insights and observations to this site. I am grateful that these people have dedicated themselves to this field of study and have drawn upon their years of experience in order to provide the rest of us with information we may not have otherwise. Yes...I have participated in all of the Opinion Polls. And...yes...I must admit...WITH REGRET...that I even voted to elect Moderators for this site, in the hopes that they would be able to effectively and competently oversee the postings made to this site in accordance with the following, which I see every time I log on to this site: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Computer-Chess Club Charter Important Information - Please Read Carefully The Computer-Chess Club is a free service that has been set up by a group of individuals who became concerned with the persistent breaches of netiquette occurring on the newsgroup, rec.games.chess.computer, namely a very high level of off-topic posts and a very high level of personal insults and abuse. It was felt that a group where a full range of computer chess ideas could be discussed, and, if necessary attacked, without also making personal attacks on the deliverer of the ideas, would be productive, and might well encourage various well-known figures who were no longer posting in rec.games.chess.computer to return to the arena of discussion without fear of insult or abuse. Thus, the Computer-Chess Club is a moderated message board which is open to the general public (known as "members"). Its purpose is to allow the members to disseminate and exchange information as it pertains to computer chess without the distractions of personal attacks and off-topic posts. Once a member gains access to the message board, he may read all messages and post new or response messages with the proviso that these new or response messages: Are, within reason, on the topic of computer chess Are not abusive in nature Do not contain personal and/or libelous attacks on others Are not flagrant commercial exhortations Are not of questionable legal status. A panel of moderators has the power to erase specific messages that violate the spirit of the charter of the Computer-Chess Club, and to take, if necessary, suitable sanctions against offenders. Members of the Computer-Chess Club are solely responsible for their own posts on the CCC Message Board. The only recourse members have against any legally dubious or abusive material is to ask and assist the moderators in identifying any such material so that it may be removed swiftly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So I ask...WHERE ARE YOU NOW?? Maybe you need to be asked to intercede, since "The only recourse members have against any legally dubious or abusive material is to ASK and assist the MODERATORS in identifying any such material so that it may be removed swiftly." So I ask...again...WHERE ARE YOU NOW?? I don't think I need to point out which posts violate the proviso stated above. I don't think I need to point out where these posts originate from...after all, that's not my job...it's yours. Finally, please don't hide behind a facade as has been done previously whereby you agonize over either the allegedly offending members rights or what constitutes a personal attack or abusive material, and then resort to what is tantamount to asking for the members to vote on the issue and determine the appropriate action to take, if any. It's not that complicated. The Charter is self-explanatory...the proviso is self-explanatory. All that is left is for you to act with swift assuredness in executing the duties of your elected posts. If you subscribe to some personal value systems that prevent you from being effective Moderators, the solution is simple...STEP DOWN.
