In FICS registration is free and ALL games are >also free. Use winboard/xboard. That is what I use on ICC and there is no spyware associated with it. You aren't forced to use their interface. I've been using xboard to access them since 1995. As far as playing with GMs, how many GM players do you see on FICS? None. So that is pretty much a moot point. I don't blame strong players for not wanting to play weak players. It isn't much fun for them. On ICC they _will_ play you if you pay them a couple of bucks for a game. Or you can play any of the other 2000+ players that are always logged in... As far as improving your own chess, watch a GM game (3 0 for example) but then play back over it slowly after the game is over. You can learn a lot from doing so.
