He doesn’t have to. He knows quite a lot about chess, and that’s what matters,
no? I quite agree with most things he says and I find Silman's opinions
interesting, among other things because it shows once again that the strength of
a program is different when measured in human-machine games or machine-machine.
Not that one way is *true* and the other isn't, but each way reveals different
strengths and weaknesses. That's why I think that engines should not be tuned
exclusively against other engines or against humans, and why the SSDF list
should not be considered as the absolute measure of all things.

Rebel seems to be the program that systematically fared best against humans over
the years, while now it oscillates between 2nd and 4th place in machine-machine
games.

About Mchess 6/7, its hyperaggressive style may make it score better against
human players and less well against programs. Mchess has the knowledge and the
tactical speed to compete with the very best, but I am quite convinced that its
own version of anti-GM play makes it weaker against programs than it would be
with a more conservative style.

It might be true that Fritz does relatively better against other programs,
although I can't be very sure about it after the good results Fritz had against
strong human players. In any case, Fritz 5 is rated #1 against machines, while
Rebel and probably also Mchess have a better record against people.

Genius is oh so boring, but very accurate and still very strong.

And I think CM5500 is quite a bit stronger than Silman says it is.

Add up Nimzo, Junior and Hiarcs and you end up with the cream of the crop. Which
one is the strongest, I have no idea and I doubt anyone really knows.
