Dieter Bürßner and Robert Hyatt have written engines of professional strength
and yet do not sell them. If we examine Leo's current contest, then we can add
Carlos del Cacho, Frank Zibi, Thomas Mayer and others to that list as well.
Instead of selling their chess engines, they give them away. I don't think that
chess programming is an effective way to get rich, but perhaps it has worked out
for two or three chess programmers. We might also ask why do people donate
their time and energy to write Linux and the GCC compiler (among other things).

It is possible for people to act in a noble way, even without any known form of
compensation.
