It is conceivable (though doubtful) that a Winboard engine could run as an
Xboard engine under Wine.

I have never tried it.  There are some other compatibility layers also, but I
doubt that they can do better.

I am very, very sure that Ruffian is not a commercial engine mangled with some
string editor.
