By the way I forgot the most important part. The modular approach would allow companies such as chessbase, for example, to leave their main engine (I was thinking at fritz for example) basically the same (if not faster and faster).. adding on to it different modules.. perhaps with "real" different styles of play... this would prevent competitors from "exploiting" the weaknesses of the program and beating it because the "positional" modules could be interchanged and updated much quicker than it would be possible if they were integrated in the chess program. Autoplayers notwithstanding (it would be great fun to see a competitor using the autoplayer to preparefor a match just to see the "positional" module suddently change... :)).
