the berlin defence by kramnik is not that risky - he knows this opening like no
other. IIRC he won a game against a computer with the berlin once, so i'm not so
sure if you are right about black's winning chances being very low, at least
against the computer. and it's the kind of position where a computer might just
do something really stupid :-)
for the kasparov match kramnik will definitely have prepared the scottish very
well too.
