I have largely heard that Mandrake is the most user friendly and easiest to
install, and I had a heck of a time installing video drivers. It's things like
that that must improve if linux is ever going to be a viable option for more
casual computer users. I was going to install Red Hat, but I missed the tiny
little button in the top corner of the screen and went on a wild goose chase on
their website. I installed the current version of Slackware instead, because I'd
heard it was nice. It took less than a week for it to crap out. No clue what
happened, just started getting mounds of error messages on bootup, then X
wouldn't start, and eventually almost nothing worked. So I went back to
Mandrake, and the install was a breeze. Then I wanted to use a resolution higher
than 640x480, so I attempted to install video drivers. About 4 hours later when
I was finished installing video drivers, I decided that I wanted to actually use
my computer in the future instead of constantly crawling my way through a
tutorial in lynx trying to figure out how to install video drivers or whatever
the problem of the day happens to be. With windows, I download video drivers,
run the executable, click a few "yes I agree, next, continue, finish" and I'm
done with all of the configuration I need to do. With linux it seems like it's a
constant battle for some reason.

So basically I don't see any reason why a casual user would ever switch to
linux. There would have to be some incentive to put up with the hassles, such as
Microsoft charging a monthly fee to use Windows, or linux would have to be a lot
more user friendly.
