 *** Shep Championship 1998 III Announcement ***

Hi all,

 I'm proud to announce that the strongest (micro) computer chess tournament
 ever (yep, I'm modest as usual :-) will commence on Saturday, 19.9.,
 at Shep's Computer Chess Site (http://come.to/SCCS).

 It will be the first big tournament to feature all of today's top
 programs in their newest incarnations, played on some of the fastest
 available hardware.

Participants:

 * Rebel 10 - the program which beat Super-GM Anand by 5:3 and
                         played at GM level in the two 40/2 matches
 * MChess Pro 8 - Marty Hirsch's newest wunderkind, still the only
                         top program to use tablebases for a perfect endgame
 * Hiarcs 7            - the long-awaited successor of the long-time SSDF #1,
                         the most human-like player of all chess programs
 * Junior 5 - successor of the current micro World Champion,
                         maybe the best defensive player in the world
			 [provided by Amir Ban/Chessbase]
 * Chessmaster 5555 - the reigning Shep Champion, often underestimated and
                         yet the most dangerous opponent for any (silicon)
                         player
 * Fritz 5 - the clear #1 of the SSDF list which plays the better
                         the more hash it gets (and it will get a lot, see
                         below)
 * Nimzo 98 - #2 on the SSDF list and consistently among the very
                         top finishers in every tournament around the world
 * Chess Tiger 11.5 - the strongest non-commercial program, significantly
                         improved with much more knowledge
 			 [provided by Christophe Theron]
 * TBD
 * TBD

Hardware:

 Thanks to the kind sponsorship of NordmannSoft Cologne (a company owned
 by a friend of my family), this tournament will be played on two identical
 machines with the following specifications:

  * Intel Pentium II CPU at 400 MHz (possibly will be overclocked to 450 MHz)
  * 128 MB SD-RAM
  * Windows 95 & 98 (tournament will run under 95)

Rules:

 The tourney will be a 9-round Round Robin with a time control of 40 moves
 in 2 hours, then 40 moves in 2 hours, then 1 hour for the rest of the game.
 In case of a tie for first place, a 6-game series at the same time controls
 will decide the winner.

WWW coverage:

 Games will be played by hand (no autoplayer) at a rate of one game per day
 (exceptions are possible), starting on 19.9. Programs which are not yet
 released will be added to the schedule as soon as I receive them.

 SCCS will be updated with results and PGN/CBV game scores every day
 (sometimes except weekends) around 1100 CET (check your local listings :-).
