I think he was saying Diep's code is not available for other people to take (steal) ideas from it. Since Crafty is open-source, any other chess programmer can implement Crafty's ideas in his own program, as well as add ideas of his own. This can only hurt Crafty's relative performance to those engines. Of course the same goes for any open-source program.
