The reason WHY they got in zeitnot was because they took too much time for their moves in the earlier part of the game. As Alekhin put it : mismanaging one's thinking time is as bas as letting a piece en prise! At the beginning of a game, you are given a certain amount of time for a certain number of moves. It is up to you about how you manage it. In my view, "time trouble" is not an excuse for anything. If you remember, in the early 80's, Karpov had usually about 1 hour left to think when he was reaching the time control (as well as Fischer in is good time). Now, maybe he grew older and that affected the speed of his play. Of course, I admit that a lot of blunders occur in zeitnot, but being in zeitnot is not an excuse, still, and these WERE GM moves...
