Honestly, I don't think those 5-10% is what you need to worry about. You should get a free compiler and just have fun learning how to program, then when you really do need those 5-10%, buy one :) It's not like 5-10% makes a world of difference anyway, unless you are extremely nps orientated. It's probably going to take you a year or two to come up with a playing program, any compiler you may have bought is going to be outdated by then anyway. I do like M$VC though, it has so many good help files. -S.
