It might be possible. But the number of categories could be so many that it can't be done. Then you would need construct categories that would try to approximate the exact result. One of the problems is that the definition of a category would hinge on the probability of legal positions. I.e. you would recognize a category by its probability distribution. An example might be a categorization of endgames by the number an types of pieces. But that the introuduction of f.ex. the Manhattan distance of the kings show that the category is wildly disparate.
