It means you chain together a bunch of "nodes" (node is usually an SMP system) and add some hardware logic so they can all see memory on other nodes. Using memory on a remote node is slower, though. It usually gets called cc-NUMA for "cache coherent" NUMA. Opteron is a NUMA type of system. The difference is that remote memory accesses on Opteron shouldn't be any worse than a local access on existing systems. Hopefully within 6 months we'll see 8-node Opteron systems. -Matt
