Maybe much time is spent in a tree search on lines that don't make much sense.... I.e. white takes black's queen but black makes silly moves in response. There is not much need to analyze those lines deeper. My conceptual problem was that I was thinking that the tree would be spending the majority of its time on lines that do make sense. If this is not true, then eliminating non-sensical lines speeds things up quite a bit. Am I bit closer to the truth? John Coffey
