I would not say that Scheme forces one into a specific paradigm. Au contraire, it is one of a class of meta-languages that makes it trivial to implement any other paradigm/design choice. It does not lock you in to any specific implementation of imperative or object design. Mainly because of its fine grained basic design and simplicity. The teaching of Scheme OTOH does tend to a certain 'way". Mainly because of its lack of restrictions. And the syntax chosen. People who dislike the syntax may choose Dylan instead. MvH Dan Andersson
