There are several architectural reasons why 32-bit code may be faster, but the
real reason is different: compiler quality.

The best compilers available generate only 32-bit code, and are aware of the
latest Pentium / Pentium-Pro speed issues. To find a 16-bit compiler, you'll
have to find one that is several years old, no upgrade planned ever, and it will
probably ask you if you want to optimize for 8086, 80286 or 80386.
