One possible point. There are 64 bit machines and there are 64 bit machines. For example, the Polywell alpha Bruce bought was a pure PC-type motherboard, with a 64 bit bus, while the real alpha has a 256 bit bus. So it was memory starved. It is possible, I suppose, that there are bad and good chipsets for the Itanium and Itanium2 processors, although I have not browsed Intel's web site to look. There are certainly good and bad dual processor chipsets from Intel, so it is possible that the same holds for IA64 as well. But that _is_ speculation, of course...
