 Most people don't know enough to make an informed decision. Not because they
are incapable of it. But because they don't take the time to do it. That is true
for most produce. Take used cars as a Nobel price winning example. Where the
buyer is at an information disadvantage. Thus the incentive and possibility to
compete with quality is limited. One beige box seem as good as any other.
 And as David noted there are small companies that assemble computers on demand.
Many keep no stock and pool buys to get quantity discounts. They do have to
charge for the assemby and shipping time so it will be maybe $150+ more
expensive than doing it yourself. And some have their own lines of computers
that tend to be well nigh bulletproof by the choice of parts.
