Individual MIPS processors are nowhere near performance leading, and I've seen very few results from MIPS machines lately. Just because some machines are being sold doesn't mean they're much of a factor in the high-end market. They're a bit like SPARC in that respect. I can imagine that a lot of customers still want to buy Alpha machines, as it is performance leading even with quite an old core (The core hasn't changed much from EV6 to EV7, and EV79 is rumored to be intentionally crippled to make Itanium look better). Had they continued to develop it agressively, they might have a huge performance lead right now. HP is contractually obligated to 'support' (produce and sell) Alpha until EV79 is released. After that, they are going to stop producing them altogether. They have cast their entire lot with Itanium, killing HP-PA and Alpha in the process.
