Transmeta CPUs are much slower because they are emulators. The Transmeta Astro
isn't very fast. They are a winner in some cases, but in raw performance they
lose big-time. They are designed for power-efficiency. The Crusoe and Astro are
both VLIW chips. The Crusoe does 4 IPC, and the Astro does 8 IPC.

Like Intel, AMD has plans for the future. Their plans include playing big in the
server market and dominating the x86 market with faster CPUs that have lower
memory latency and more bandwidth. The K8 will include SSE 2 support in addition
to being the first and only x86-64 chip.
