I have been searching for information on which positions certain engines like and dislike. Apparently, all engines are better in open than in closed positions. Hiarcs plays a more positional style, whereas Fritz is slightly stronger when playing an attack. All this does not help for example, when you are trying to put together an optimized opening book for an engine. Clearly Fritz does not need an optimized opening book to play against me. But playing against other engines, you would like to prepare an opening book that leads the engine into positions it plays well and avoids position it does not understand so well. Is anybody aware of an evaluation of engine performance by ECO? Primarily I am interested in commercial engines (Fritz, Hiarcs, Shredder, Junior, ChessTiger), but also free engines (Ruffian, Crafty etc). Has anybody evaluated engine vs engine matches based on ECO? Or does anybody know a website where the results are published? Thanks, Frank -- DON'T MAIL THE REPLY ADDRESS!
