chess being more popular; the standards were there first (Winboard, PGN, ICS)
and were good for their time so gave a solid base which led to further
improvements and further standards (UCI, suggestions for improving PGN) ...

Other games are catching up and only by imitation; for example, there is a PDN
standard for draughts, largely a copy of PGN, but (as far as I know) no
equivalent of Winboard.

Also, I think a game of chess, because it is not immediate and is considered
"intellectual", is subconsciously a relatively Big Thing, again an incentive for
improvement and adding features; although many people play it I doubt many save
computerised Scrabble games in databases ...!
