I ran it for several days a long while back and it behaved just as you said.

One problem is the non-checking move at around ply 30 in the tree, as given
on Ed's web page.  Another problem is evaluation.  In critical positions where
material becomes equal, the evaluation has to favor the "right" side to have
a chance to see the draw, otherwise the other side can vary almost infinitely
to avoid repeating...
