I think what you are referring to is the old Northwestern Universtity CHESS
program by Larry Atkin and David Slate.  Byte magazine did publish the old 0.5
source code in Pascal, the listing was so long they had to spread it over two
issues (Jan and Feb 1978 IIRC).  I used to have a copy of those listings, not
sure if I still do.

Dan and Kathe Spracklen published the Z80 assembly source code to the original
Sargon right after it blew away the field at the 1978 West Coast Computer Fair.
I do have a copy of that one.  It was a rather impressive program for its day
considering it ran on a 2MHz 8-bit processor.
