In general, you should buy the fastest machine you can afford. That is good advice no matter what you are going to do with your computer. The machine that we used to beat GM Larry Christiansen in a 4-game match on ICC was a P4-2.4GHz. You should be able to find one of these for under $700 if you look hard enough (and don't want too many other extras like a huge hard drive and a ton of RAM). jm
