Nothing to do with Cache IMO. The Centrino has a longer pipeline than the PIII. And a better branch prediction mechanism. So it has better IPC than the PIII. While able to reach higer frequencies. That and a micro operation optimizing stage makes it closer in IPC to the AMD Athlon than any other Intel processor ever. I would love to have a desktop system with one of these CPUs.
