The problem is that the Opteron is positioned by AMD as the Great Big Xeon
Killer! To live up to that, it should really also run existing programs at least
as fast as a Xeon.

If it takes a recompile, we could just as well go for an Itanic, or Alpha, or
G5, or ...


One problem with the Itanium is that it might be fast for native programs, but
it runs old x86 programs slower than the original. The Opteron, on the other
hand, has hardware support for 32-bit x86 code, so it runs it ... eh ...
slightly slower than a P4/Xeon. Not good!
