My favourite chess book is 'The Art of Chess Analysis' by Timman but its
probably not what you are looking for.

'Simple Chess' by Stean is a hugely underrated book and would probably fit your
bill, I highly recommend you find yourself a copy.

You can never go past something like '1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and
Combinations' (the only Reinfeld book I'd recommend :-) for drilling those ever
important tactics!

I didn't see Watson's 'Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy' mentioned by anybody,
its a thought provoking book by an excellent author. Could be useful for engine
developers.

cheers,
Peter
