You are right. I have never seen any of the source code to Chess System Tal,
of course.

When I included Chris among those I wanted to thank on my Web page, it was
partly because of his countless intelligent, thought-provoking and amusing
contributions here at CCC and at rgcc, and partly because of his fantastic
chess program.

I haven't owned a Windows computer for very many years. Chess System Tal
is the only Windows program I have ever missed. There were many stronger
programs at the time, but they were not nearly as enjoyable to play against.

Gothmog started out as my attempt to create a "Macintosh version of CST".
It is not an easy task, partly because I am a very much weaker chess player
than Chris (about 500 points difference, I guess). But it is improving.
Gothmog is playing many ridiculously stupid games, of course, but there are
also a few wild sacrifical games which look like they are played by a
demented version of CST.

I don't see the point in trying to make yet another program like Fritz
or Crafty. I would much rather like to make an engine with a unique and
entertaining style of play, even if that means it will always be several
hundred Elo points weaker than Crafty.

As a nice example of Gothmog's style when it works as intended, I would
like to mention the first of the two games posted by Alex Schmidt on the
Winboard forum earlier tonight (although there were no speculative
sacrifices in that game). I wish I could play like that myself.

>as far as i remember it, it was me saving the sources regularly.

You still have the sources somewhere, I hope? I would like to continue
believing that there is at least an infinitesimal chance that CST will
be resurrected some day ...
