I think that I once read here that a doubling in compute speed does not double
you programs playing strength but only adds about 75 or so ELO points to its
strength. It was pointed out that with each sucessive depth of search you PC
takes about 6 times longer to complete the search.
I know from my own personal experience on my old PC which was a 466mhz that my
chess program would search to about 6 plys in One minute but on my laptop which
is a 1.2ghz I could search to 7 plys in the same amount of time.
