I don't want to argue that Per-Ola is a great chess programmer, his results speak for themselves. I will argue, that a first release being a strong one doesn't imply you are a super talented programmer. The only thing you will accomplish spreading this point of view is fewer winboard engines, cause nobody wants to release an early development engine if they get stuck with the label of bad programmer. I can tell you that Ruffian has also been a bad program some point in time, only it was never released at that stage. Besides you can't know how many hours has gone into the engine, some (like Brutus,Fritz?) have a whole team of engeneers working on them for hours every day, while others may only spend a few hours a week in soletude with their ideas. The released result does not necessarily equal "talent of the creater" but rather the "current state of development". -S.
