GNU isn't supposed to be an interesting opponent. There's a distinction between including a potential competitor like SmarThink and an inferior (and presumably outdated) engine like GNU chess. The difference is tournament chess instead of idleness in case of a bye versus free entrance of a competitive engine. The latter doesn't seem logical since the rest had to register to compete.
