Chess data standards will be making an appearance over the next few months.

Yes.

XWL, being a general data interchange format, has the support support of common,
free utilities and source.  The down side is that the generality brings nothing
special to the table in terms of advantages specific to the chess domain.  Also,
XML is not particularly friendly to human readers and so it cannot replace PGN
as a mode of distribution on channels like BBSs and newsgroups.

Undoubtedly, XML can have some kind of role as an adjunct format for data
storage that is rarely, if ever, viewed directly by an end user.
