I don't get it why Friedel's interview should be remarkable! Yes, it is very remarkable to present the main representative of one business side of the show and let him make bogus comments about the importance of the show. - What FRITZ is concerned we still remember the unforgettable show in Bahrain. It was KRAMNIK, who is the one who has won the championship in a match against Kasparov, who made the unbelievable commentary that he had lost his chess memory durin the second half of the event, which reminds us of the old fairy tales of 1001 nights and the woman Sheherazade. - What KASPAROV is concerned we know that he is no longer the best human player, because he lost to KRAMNIK fair and straight, and he never was the strongest because there is only one candidate for that crown and his name is FISCHER. - What FRIEDEL is concerned, even a study in philosophy, not to speak of linguistics, can hide that he is just a marketing guru and business man. He knows enough about chess journalism to stir up the emotions a little bit, but his old buddy Kasparov is no longer a serious number in World's chess. - What X3D is concerned it is ridiculous to pretend that now at last people can hope to be able to play "real" virtual chess. Because if people want to play real chess, also in 3D, nobody can stop them to play human chess in one of the thousands of clubs everywhere. A real chess player does not need X3D or 3D to play chess against a chess machine. Not to speak of chess masters who also need no display at all, because they can play chess like a blind just with the imagined pieces in his head. A virtual board for chess is unneccessary because a 2D board on the display contains all the informations needed for the battle in chess. That is different for all kind of adventure games. - What the FUTURE of chess is concerned, the machines will need some further time to improve their play to become dangerous for real chess GM. Actually a motivated 2150 player from Germany, who is willing to play the biggest nonsense chess, can outplay a computer in chess, because the machine cannot be prepared for all kind of situations a smart human being can create. And nobody did ever pretend that chess machines are smart. No, they are fast, they are exact, but all this only till darkness brings complete blindness at the so called horizon of the machine; the maximum depth beyond which the machine can no longer see what will happen. Of course a human being has no limitations. His experience can help him see till the end of the game. Of course philosopher Friedel must plead for the mercy of ignorance although he knows exactly what a chess machine can do and what it cannot achieve. But a philosopher as a business man is in a so called double bind. - Somehow the whole event is justified because Kasparov played an incredibly high role in the marketing of ChessBase, the company of Friedel. So it's only fair that he gets anothr 1 million dollars or some such for his old age. Rolf
