Subject: Rebel 10 low tactical behavior

Author: Oreo Kostas

Date: 08:49:08 11/15/98

Yesterday i decided to put Rebel 10 to a test that i thought was hard but didnt
imagine that Rebel will disappoint me so much.
I had Rebel10 play a GM friend of mine(his rating will be 2565 in January
listings) 10 10 minute games.I was excpecting Rebel to win this match allthough
John(my friend) is playing amzingly well even at low time controls. The result
was
3 draws
2 wins for Rebel
5!!!Losses.
But what is more amazing is that it was smashed in tactical play with sacrifices
any time wanted by the audience (we were 5 people watching him)
But what made me really angry is the last game.John tried to play as
eccentrically as he could,in order to prove me that rebel was really weak at
tactics.
Unfortunately I dont remember all the games ,i thought that Rebel has an
autosave feature like Fritz, but look at a fragment from the lst Game.

White:Pawns a2,b2,c2,e4,f4,g2,h4,Rooks d1,h3,Bishops d3,g5,Knight d4,g3,Queen f3
Black:Pawns a6,b4,d6,e6,f7,g7,h6,Rooks a8,f8,Bishops b7,e7,Knight f6,d7,Queen c7

Blach=Rebel 10 to move

now black played
1..Qd8??!!2.Ngf5?!(this move is bad but look at Rebels answers)ef5 3.Nf5 hg5??
impossible mistake 4.hg5 Re8 5 Rdh1 and rebel saw that he is mate in 5 at once

I later let Rebel think at move 3 for a while but after 4 minutes it could not
find mate in 7 nor even see that this move is leading in to trouble.
I tried many different settings but in vain.
I later put the excact same position in fritz 5.16.Fritz sees that hg5 is bad
(it actually never plays QD8)after a few seconds.

My system configutarion
Pentium II 300
128MB Ram.

Any comments??

I really will try to reproduce some of the games
