The rules of chess are the _only_ agreement between the two of us when we sit down to play a game. If you want me to resign at -8, then you have the option to tell me "Before we start, if my score gets to -8 I will resign, if yours gets to -8 I want you to resign." I have the option to tell you "OK" or "no". At that point, you can get up and forfeit the game, or you can play _by the rules_ and either mate me, get mated, or we draw. > >OK, I resign. When you choose an untenable position to defend, it could be considered "a loss of time". Just pick a better position. Or change the rules to better suit your idea of what the rules should be. But don't complain when _I_ choose to follow the written rules exactly as written... As that is a poor argument. Most games played today end up with a sudden-death time control. The point of such time controls is to prevent lengthy games. Demanding that I resign won't fly, as I demand that you show that you can beat me in the time alotted for the game. Again, the clock is _in_ the rules for a reason. > >Sandro
