I have the following engines that have a go on www.playchess.com. Here are
their performances against Shredder 7.04:

1. Fritz 8 (2+ 1= 1-)
2. Hiarcs 9 (3+ 9= 5-)
3. Chess Tiger 15 (2+ 5= 5-)
4. Junior 8 (0+ 4= 3-)
(No Shredder, because I'm waiting for Shredder 8)

All are running under their default parameters. My PC is a P4 2.0 GHz, and
these are Blitz games (mostly 5' + 0", but with a few 3' + 2" and others
sprinkled in the mix). I set the hash tables to 64 MB. The opening books that
I use for all these engines were created by extracting games from my TWIC
database in which at least one player in each game was rated >=Elo 2500. I
think I started out with about 189,000 games. After each day of play, the games
for each individual engine are imported into the opening book so that it can
"learn" from its experience.

EACH ENGINE HAS THEIR OWN BOOK. They may have started out identically, but the
books are now slightly different. Currently, they've only imported around 60
new games each, so I don't think it has had much of an effect on the book. I'm
hoping that over time each engine's book will become more and more unique,
leading to a more customized book? At some point in time, I will filter out the
games by each engine, reset the weights in the book, and use each engine's games
as a means for the book to "Learn." This way, they book is more influenced by
the games played by the engine. I'll probably do this after each engine has
racked up 500+ games against a variety of competition over the 'net.

Anyway, just this non-programmer's 2 cents.
