I agree entirely that this would be nice, but I don't see how this is
related to the use of console IO.  It is obviously possible to extend
the xboard protocol to support other games.  In fact, I am using an
extension of the xboard protocol when adding support for hexagonal
chess in Gothmog.

I was wondering why you why you are not satisfied with the existing protocols,
why you think it would be better to replace them with something entirely
new instead of extending them, and why you consider the use of console
IO to be disadvantageous.
