AFAIK, standard so-called "check-pointing" software does exactly this job for you with *any* application that you desire running under its control. Such check-pointing software is surely available for free under Linux/Unix -- I remember having once used an according tool called "Condor" which was even able to check-point *distributed* applications on a network of workstations. =Ernst=
