Giving a small increment for every move made seems much more logical than suddenly giving a huge increment after 40 (or whatever) moves. What is so special about the number 40? I believe that time controls of the form x moves/y minutes are common only for historical reasons. Before the days of digital chess clocks, time controls with increment were probably impossible from a practical point of view. Tord
