First you play CG on your palm and Crafty on your PC against a group of GM players, either on ICC or at a tournament. The first question is, will CG do as well as Crafty in that event? I think that it will be overwhelming for Crafty, if the games are longish (at blitz, they might both roll over most GM players of course). You already said that your PC crushes your palm, which is expected since the PC is far faster. But for your point to hold, the first test would need to produce results that are pretty close, which I don't think would happen. If it did happen, then my hypothesis would certainly be wrong. However, on more than one occasion Roman noticed I was running on something "stronger than usual" even before I had changed my finger notes or told anyone. Another GM caught the quad opteron one night and sent me a message "what in the hell is this thing running on now?" :) He had only played it two games so he figured out something was different very quickly. I've seen that kind of acuity from those guys many many times.
